Monopoly Busting

Here is a list of the 5 largest companies in the world by market capitalization (ie stock value) along with alternatives to patronizing them.

Apple and Microsoft: install Linux on an old PC and get used to using it. If in the future you want to break from Apple or Microsoft, you will be ready. Example of a Linux version that has a good desktop is Chakra. It comes with Firefox for browsing the web.

Google: easy to avoid. Just use Yahoo, Bing, or DuckDuckGo and set one as your default search engine. Bing is owned by Microsoft so probably not the best choice. Verizon just bought Yahoo. DuckDuckGo is privately held and they are not saying who owns them. If anyone can find out who is funding DuckDuckGo, I would be interested.

Amazon: As much as I have liked Amazon for decades, they have gotten too big and are now crushing small companies and innovation. When possible, order directly from manufacturers. If a paperback is less expensive that a Kindle book, order the paperback.

Facebook: Just stop using Facebook. The quality of your life will improve. If you must use it, limit the amount of time you spend on it. Try emailing your friends directly or even calling them on the phone.

The time is now to prepare for the coming info-monopocalypse!
